Hoani Waititi Marae held a working bee to start the beginnings of a new focus on sustainable living and eating healthy. A maara kai/edible garden was installed with the help from My Backyard Garden Project which aims to increase the number of vegetable gardens in family’s backyards and use donated goods, services and recycled materials to do so.

Whanau members attended a workshop with other families also receiving gardens and learnt about composting and planting seedlings. The workshop also had a focus on Maramataka/Maori Lunar calendar to show how times and dates for planing can be guided by cycles of the moon. The working bee date was chosen using Maramataka.

Whanau members also plan to build more maara kai and raise some of the garden beds for elders. Orchards, chickens and pigs are also in the plans for the Marae and members from the Marae, Kura and Kohanga Reo are all involved.

Healthy Families Waitakere Activator Michele Eickstaedt connected the whanau members with My Backyard Garden Project.
