Over fifty people came together for an afternoon at the Waitemata Rugby Football to take over the club kitchen and create simple, healthy dishes that reduce food waste going into landfill.
Community cooks attended the session run by Diabetes Projects Trust, Auckland Council supporting Love Food Hate Waste.
Majority of the participants run various cooking programmes throughout Auckland. The group divided themselves into teams of 6 and challenged each other to make the best dish.
Prior to cooking their best recipe, the group learnt about ways to reduce food waste, new tips and tricks around cooking and even discovered food items they hadn’t seen before.
The food provided on the day had a message around reducing food waste too. Ingredients were of good quality but unwanted and had been gifted to Vision West. Vision West donated the rescued food for the participants to cook with.
Healthy Families Waitakere Activator Michele Eickstaedt connected Diabetes Projects Trust and Auckland Council supporting Love Food Hate Waste to bring this workshop to community cooks in Waitakere and the wider Auckland region.
