Nine West Auckland businesses took part in a six week challenge launched by Healthy Families Waitakere to acknowledge workplaces that encourage, support and promote healthy food, physical activity, alcohol reduction, and smokefree environments.

Manufacturer Regal Beloit in Avondale received recognition for starting a walking challenge and planting fruit trees on site. General Manager David Priestley says that supporting each other to eat more healthy food is a great start, “We have started with the planting of some fruit trees on site and there is enthusiasm in the team to start a vegetable garden in the spring and enjoy growing and eating healthy food together,” says Mr Priestley.

Staff from Decrastrip, a sign and graphic business were also motivated to increase their levels of activity by participating in trainings that took place in the carpark after work, “We started to bring a trainer in to run group exercise twice a week. Once people were participating in the training, they had more energy at work and it became a great talking point throughout the day,” says Managing Director Brodie Caldwell.

Both Regal Beloit and Decrastrip received an acknowledgement award at a West Auckland Business Association Business After 5 Event hosted by Healthy Families Waitakere together with Sport Waitakere.

David and Brodie are now working to support nearby businesses to also implement health and wellness activities in the workplace.
